Greetings!
My name is Wy Plummer and I am the African American Ministries (AAM) Coordinator for the Presbyterian Church in America. The African American Ministries advances the vision of the PCA, which is to “glorify God by extending the kingdom of Jesus Christ over all individual lives through all areas of society and in all nations and cultures.” We do this as part of our calling as missionaries in extending God’s kingdom through Jesus Christ.
AAM’s mission is to build an influential community of thriving African American leaders and congregants through resources and relationships out of which we recruit, support, and mobilize leaders, with an emphasis on church planters.
Why the PCA Seeks a Stronger African American Presence
Through the evangelistic efforts of our churches, the PCA is committed to reaching the multitudes for Jesus Christ and enfolding people of every ethnic group in a desire to more clearly reflect the passage in Revelation, “a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb.” (Revelations 7:9). African Americans are a key segment of this great multitude, yet they are not well represented in the PCA. Of the more than 4,500 PCA pastors, only about one percent are African American. MNA-AAM intends to bring in many more and to facilitate their work in planting a steadily increasing number of PCA churches with the ultimate goal of reaching all kinds of people.
Biographical Sketch
My wife Shirley and I have been in the PCA since 1982, and I was ordained as a PCA pastor in 1995. In addition to my position as MNA African American Ministries Coordinator, I also serve as part-time pastor at New City Fellowship, Chattanooga TN, and am a member of the Advisory Board of Covenant Theological Seminary. I earned my undergraduate degree from Howard University and graduate degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Chesapeake Reformed Theological Seminary.
I am joined in this work by AAM Operations Manager Denine Blevins, Regional Fellowship Director Alex Shipman, and a team of Teaching Elders and leaders who are committed to making the PCA feel like home for more African Americans.
